The Art of Home Transformation: Creating Spaces That Tell Your Story - By Roy Mitchell

When I think about what makes a home truly transformative, it goes far beyond selecting stylish furniture or trendy décor. For me, transformative design means reshaping how you live in your space—how it feels, functions, and supports your day-to-day life. It's about creating an environment that reflects your story and evolves with you through every season of life.
Over the years, I’ve worked with clients experiencing all kinds of life transitions—moving into larger homes, downsizing after kids have left the nest, purchasing second properties, or simply reinventing their long-time homes. In every case, the key to success has been understanding who they are and what they need now, not who they were when the home was first decorated. I take a holistic approach that considers how the space should serve your lifestyle while celebrating your personality.
One of my favorite ways to start is with what I call the “closet test.” By taking a look at your wardrobe, I can often identify the colors you naturally gravitate toward. Those colors usually translate beautifully into interior design. The tones you wear confidently are the ones you’ll feel most comfortable living with. This connection between fashion and interiors isn’t random—furniture design trends often follow the cues of the apparel industry. So if you love soft pastels, deep earth tones, or bold primaries, those choices help inform a palette that feels authentic to you.
Another misconception I often help clients move past is the idea that a design refresh requires starting from scratch. In reality, some of the most meaningful and stylish designs come from blending the old with the new. I always encourage clients to keep pieces with sentimental or structural value. If a chair has eight-way hand-tied springs or solid wood framing, it’s worth preserving. With a little creativity, even the most traditional furniture can be reimagined for a modern home.
I remember one project where a client had a mid-century walnut buffet that had been passed down through generations. Instead of replacing it, we refinished it in a crisp black and white scheme and updated the hardware. It became a stunning focal point with a personal story—something no new piece could replicate. That’s the magic of design rooted in meaning.
Ultimately, my role isn’t to create a showroom. It’s to help you feel at home in a space that works for your life today. Whether that involves incorporating biophilic design elements, reworking the layout for better flow, or blending vintage and contemporary pieces, the goal is always the same: creating a home that tells your story and supports how you live.
Because a truly transformative home isn’t just beautiful—it’s personal.

Transforming Homes Through Life's Transitions: The Mitchell Thompson Interiors Story

We truly believe a well-designed home serves as the foundation for a fulfilling life. We don’t just select furnishings; we help people navigate major life changes. Whether it’s moving into a new home, redesigning spaces after kids leave for college, or creating a dream vacation retreat, we believe that every home tells the story of a family’s journey.   As Roy says, “The goal is to create an environment where you can be your best self for your best purpose.” When a space is thoughtfully designed, it supports daily life in a way that feels effortless and inspiring.

What sets us apart is the deeply personal understanding we build with our clients. We take the time to listen—not just to their functional needs but to their dreams for their homes. This consultative process ensures our designs are not only visually stunning, but meaningful and customized to each client’s personality and lifestyle. Over the years, we’ve embraced technology to enhance the design experience. With space plans, renderings, and virtual furnishings samples, we make the process more accessible and less intimidating while maintaining the personal connection that is at the heart of our work.

For those who have considered working with an interior designer but felt overwhelmed by the idea, we understand. Many people assume that hiring a designer is an intimidating or unattainable luxury, but we are committed to making the process approachable, enjoyable, and rewarding. Traditionally, our business has grown through word-of-mouth referrals, which speaks volumes about the trust and satisfaction our clients feel. We’re now embracing new ways to connect with more people, through podcasting, to share our expertise and demystify the design process.

Whether we’re imagining a cozy family home, designing a sleek modern retreat, or curating the perfect blend of old and new, it is our greatest pleasure to walk the journey with our clients and  transform their lives through thoughtfully designed homes that tell a story, support a lifestyle, and bring joy to everyday living.
